6. Can someone please explain to me, in the simplest terms possible, what exactly is a Teraflop? I only heard of the word after reading about PS3 and watching Terminator 3.

7. A teraflop is the ability to do one trillion floating point operations per second. In simpler terms, it's a measure of computing power. The higher than number, the faster the system operates.

8. Yes, Microsoft should be worried as far as xBox is concerned, but Intel should be even more worried. Cell could completely take over Intel;s market unless they come out with something very impressive soon.

12. I think it's a white elephant project. Think about it: all technology news channels are talking about it, but no-one has given any concrete reasons why it should be a commercial success.

The technology is cool, but will the application of the technology be cool? Will Cell really run faster for applications that matter? Or will it be cheaper?

XB2 = 2 Power4 + ATI R500 + mature SDK
PS3 = 1 Power4 + 8 Cell cores + unknown SDK

Eh...no... PS3 will be using 4 Cell processors... so... using your terminology

PS3 = 4 Power4 + 32 Cell cores + Nvidia+unknown SDK

PS3 will rock:)

15. hmmm... i realise this thread is over a month old but in the light of the 'officially announced' specs ...did someone rather high up at sony make a big boo boo quite a while ago that the ps3 would contain four ACTUAL cell processors as opposed to the true ONE! ..a lot of blogs (and usually more reliable sources) seem to have thought so???????????
PS- for those who have cottoned on re the xbox360 specs.. it ALSO has ONE processor/cpu ..it just happens to have three CORES within it. ..which isn't quite the same eg- possibly less bandwidth to the main system memory etc ..depending on the exact bus/memory controller implementations

Like any processor, the Cell is going to be as variable as the year it appears.

Multiple Cell units are more than a possibility on the PS3, but no more than two would ever be considered, and each one would furtherly 'cut-down' to reduce complexity.

Sony/IBM/Toshiba are waiting until 0.065nm Cell chips can be made, easily, at which point, expect clock speeds and on-die-cache to increase, thus increasing the overall performance of Cell ([but reducing the chance of a 2x Cell array].

Cell is one capable CPU and the RSX GPU needs it. There's no other CPU out there at the moment that can get anywhere near the capability of unlocking the nVidia RSX [which hasn't even been fabricated as yet; all tech demos were Cell driven]. The nVidia RSX GPU design is still under testing and developement.

How would a 0.065nm Cell chip perform? About 4.5Ghz alongside a 900Mhz 0.065nm RSX GPU. Will the PS3 get more memory to be able to real-time KillZone2 and MotorStorm? 512Mb wouldn't do it and I doubt GDDR3 could either.

Cell has to be a success through PS3. The reason Blu-Ray is PS3's launch window.
Rambus are probably at their most triumphant as the press feedback heightens the effects of the PS3, and XDR-RDRAM's association to it. That means cheaper costs toward manufacturer and the licensing imposed upon those using it.
